The Art of War
by Sun Tzu
The ancient Chinese military treatise that shaped strategic thinking for centuries — principles on warfare that apply to business, negotiation, and everyday decision-making.
My Review
Sun Tzu's brevity is his strength. Every line is a principle you can apply immediately. The concept that 'every battle is won or lost before it is fought' — meaning preparation and positioning determine outcomes — is a framework I use when approaching audits, negotiations, and cross-departmental projects. The emphasis on knowing both yourself and your opponent applies directly to competitive analysis in business. 'Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak' is a masterclass in strategic communication. A book to reread annually.
